He told us about his experiences while escaping Syria with his children at night through the mountains with nothing more than a BIC lighter to light their path in fear of being spotted. We enjoyed a cup of delicious tea he made for us. I think of him often and hope he has found a safe home for himself and his family.

Huayusa is a tea consumed in the early morning before the sun comes up. Dim light of the burning logs that heat a large pot of Huayusa leaves and water. The Achuar drink this tea, purge and discuss meaningful subjects and tell stories. They discuss building plans, family matters, dreams and settle disputes during this ceremony.
